Le Mars Girls Basketball Falls in Regional Semifinal

The Le Mars girls basketball had their season end on Saturday night. The Bulldogs fell in their regional semifinal with third-ranked Bishop Heelan by a 50-45 final score.

From the outside, this game looked like it would be an easy Heelan win that would see them get a chance to make their third state tournament in four years. That thinking was not relayed to the Bulldogs, however. Head Coach Cody Dyhrkopp says that his team fully expected to compete, and that is what they did.

Le Mars shined at its brightest in the second half. Le Mars entered the second half down 22-15 and came all the way back to be down two points with a minute and a half to go in the game. Coach Dyhrkopp says that the comeback was a result of his team making plays when needed.

The key to the Bulldogs’ success in the second half was Zoe Wittkop. The sophomore had a quiet first half scoring no points. She went on to score 15 points in the second half to keep the Bulldogs in striking distance. Coach Dyhrkopp knows it’s always a possibility for her to take over a game due to the ability she possesses.

The Bulldog season comes to an end with a record of 10-13. Le Mars graduates two seniors off this team in Maggie Allen and Hannah Rolfes. Coach Dyhrkopp says both of those seniors brought a different thing to the table that was very valuable.

The bright spot in all of this for Le Mars is the fact that the majority of their roster and starting five will return. The Bulldogs will return one junior, six sophomores, and six freshmen next year. Coach Dyhrkopp says that the key for the returners will be staying active so they are ready to be better physically for next year.

Bishop Heelan’s record improved to 20-2 with the win. The Crusaders now match up with fifteenth-ranked Spencer in the regional final on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
