Le Mars Boys Track Wins State Qualifying Meet – Girls Qualify Six Events to State

400

The Le Mars boys track team had a meet for the ages on Friday night on the track surrounding Jim Lorenzen Field. The Bulldogs won the meet as a team with 135 points while qualifying 12 different events for the state meet in Des Moines. Head Coach Caleb Van Otterloo says it took a full team effort on Friday for the results to be this impressive.

The state qualifying meet usually highlights an athlete’s hard work over months to get to a point where they can qualify for state. Coach Van Otterloo says that was no different for his team who worked very hard to run their best on Friday.

The Bulldogs are very familiar with the “Blue Oval” over the last couple of years. Brandon VanderSluis will try and defend a state title in the discus from last season, and the Bulldogs competed in a handful of events at the Drake Relays in April. Coach Van Otterloo says the expectations will be high, but he hopes that experience can help carry the Bulldogs this weekend.

In trying to meet those high expectations, Van Otterloo says he wants his guys to focus more on their individual marks rather than their opponents’ marks. He says, when that happens, things usually take care of themselves.

The Bulldog girls had a tougher day in the team standings finishing fifth place with some talent above them in the likes of Spencer, MOC-Floyd Valley, Sioux Center, and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. Despite the tough finish in the team standings, the Bulldogs were still able to qualify six events for the state meet this weekend. Understandably, Head Coach Tammy Dunn was pleased to see her team run at their best in their most important meet.

Coach Dunn says that this meet was special for her and her team due to the effort put forth. She says the Bulldogs reached their peak at the right time on Friday night.

The key now for the Bulldogs is to keep that going into the state meet this weekend. Coach Dunn highlighted a couple of athletes who caught her eye on Friday and what the Bulldogs need to do to have a successful showing this weekend.
