Gehlen Catholic Volleyball Looks to Continue Trend of Success Under Dan Goebel

Gehlen Catholic volleyball begins a new era in the 2022 season as Dan Goebel takes over the coaching reigns from legendary head coach Mike Meyer. The Jays are coming off their fifth straight state tournament appearance in 2021, and Goebel says they will try to replace some key spots from that team this year.

Goebel says he’s going to be looking for his experienced upperclassmen to help make sure the younger athletes are ready to step up.

One key spot that the Jays need to replace is their libero spot. The Jays graduated Alyssa Kolbeck who averaged nearly four digs per set last season. Coach Goebel says it will take another few practices to get that position fully fleshed out.

The transition from long-time head coach to new coach is one that is never easy. Coach Goebel says it helps that Coach Meyer brought the program up to where it is today. Now, the goal for Coach Goebel is to keep it there.

As the Jays close down the days before their first competition, offensive execution has been a key focus for them. Coach Goebel says clean passing is the focal point to any successful team.

The Jays open their season on Thursday August 25th when they head to Sheldon for a varsity tournament. KLEM Radio will broadcast select War Eagle Conference matches for Gehlen Catholic beginning on September 6 when the Jays take on Unity Christian.
