MMCRU Football Looks to Grow with Young Team

MMCRU football is coming off a one-win season last year that saw them go winless in the district. From there, the only direction to go is in a positive one. Head football coach Kyle Oswald knows that and is looking towards the positives of this year’s young squad.

The Royals sport just two seniors on their roster which could suggest that they don’t return a lot of experience, but that isn’t the case. Some of their main returners are on offense in junior quarterback Jonah Petersen and junior wide receiver Kyler Bork. Peterson threw for 662 yards and five touchdowns in 2021. Bork caught 11 passes for 191 yards and a pair of TDs. Coach Oswald says those two have been working hard in the offseason to make sure they have a good connection. He also says it demonstrates their leadership that will be on display throughout the year.

Last season, the Royal offense averaged 230 yards per game. They did it behind an offensive line in which four out of the five starters return for this season. Coach Oswald hopes that experience will continue to set the tone for what the Royals can do in the trenches.

On defense, the Royals sit in the dark a little. MMCRU allowed 33 points per game last season and had some plans to improve things this year. Those plans haven’t panned out, and Coach Oswald says this is where the younger athletes could have a big impact.

With one of the largest MMCRU football rosters in recent memory, Coach Oswald continues to hammer home the point that everyone needs to be ready. He says if they can get everyone to buy into that, the Royals will be set for success in the future.

MMCRU opens the year on the road at Cherokee who is coming off a 4-5 season. The Royals held their own in that matchup last year falling by a single touchdown. Kickoff will be at 7:00 in Cherokee on Friday night.
