Gehlen Catholic Volleyball Sweeps Away First Round Opponent

The third-ranked Gehlen Catholic volleyball team started their path to Coralville with a dominant straight-set win over Woodbury Central on Monday night.

The Jays outscored Woodbury Central 3-1 on average throughout the match leading to some lopsided scores by match’s end. It was the first career postseason game for head coach Dan Goebel who says he saw a slight lack of intensity to start the match.

The lack of execution came into play at times when Woodbury Central sent free balls over the net. Coach Goebel says the Jays weren’t always able to take advantage of those prime opportunities for points.

Once the Jays did get into system offensively, it was business as usual. Cadence Goebel dished out 34 assists while both Miyah Whitehead and Aurora Goebel got into double-figures in kills. Coach Goebel says the hitters were playing their attacks smarter which helped keep the Jays rolling.

The win moves Gehlen Catholic into the quarterfinal round of the regional bracket. The first round may have seemed easy for the Jays, but Coach Goebel knows his team needs to come out strong and ready to play in the ensuing rounds to have a deep run.

The Jays will host Woodbine in the regional quarterfinal on Wednesday night. KLEM Radio will broadcast the match live with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45.
