Gehlen Catholic Shows Improved Energy in Sweep of Woodbine

Third-ranked Gehlen Catholic volleyball wasted no time in sweeping Woodbine in a regional quarterfinal on Wednesday night.

The Jays were coming off a win against Woodbury Central that had them a little disappointed in their enthusiasm in that match. That wasn’t the case in their match with Woodbine. Head coach Dan Goebel says the energy was there from everyone throughout the match.

Those adjustments involved responding to Woodbine’s tweaks offensively. Coach Goebel says it didn’t take long for his team to make the adjustment and continue cruising.

The third set did test the Jays a little with Woodbine keeping it within one or two points throughout the middle section of the set before the Jays pulled away to finish. Coach Goebel says being in a tense situation is beneficial to his team, and he says it was nice to see them play through it calmly.

The Jays will continue their postseason on Monday night against a familiar foe. Remsen St. Mary’s is up next for the Jays in the regional semifinal. The Hawks played a competitive four-set match with the Jays in their only meeting this season. Coach Goebel knows both teams will come in hungry to continue their season.

First serve will be at 7:00 on Monday in Le Mars. KLEM Radio will bring the action to you with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45.
