Le Mars Basketball Earns First Sweep in Wins Over CB TJ

The Le Mars basketball teams picked up their first sweep of the season at home against Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.

The Bulldog girls opened the night with a commanding 71-22 win over the Yellow Jackets.

The game started off with intensity and with energy from the Bulldogs especially on defense. Le Mars forced turnover after turnover with their full court defense allowing them to lead 19-5 after one quarter. Head Coach Cody Dyhrkopp says his team did a good job of varying their pressure to make things difficult.

The offensive looks did not just come from layups underneath the basket. The Bulldogs finished the game an impressive 10-21 from the three-point arch. Le Mars finished with three players in double figure scoring. Coach Dyhrkopp says the success offensively comes from the confidence they get when their first shot falls.

The game was also a good chance to get some players involved that do not usually see the floor. Le Mars was able to empty their bench of players for the first time this season. They finished with 10 players scoring at least two points. Coach Dyhrkopp knows games like these are valuable opportunities for these players.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Madi Huls and Metta Skov with 14 points apiece as they improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the MRAC. The Bulldogs have now upped their win streak to three games.

The Bulldog boys finished the night with their first win of the year beating the Yellow Jackets by a final of 83-47.

The offense clicked in many ways throughout the night for the Bulldogs. They ended up with an impressive shooting percentage of 54% on 33-61 shooting. Head Coach Dave Irwin says the Bulldogs knew they were going to see a zone defense, and they capitalized on it.

The Bulldogs took advantage of some stellar post play with Ben Martin, Andrew Fifita, and Drew Galles all scoring at least 16 points in the win. Coach Irwin says each one brings a different ability to the game that makes them challenging to deal with.

The first win of the year for the Bulldogs was special after a few tough losses to open the year. Coach Irwin says a win will help bolster confidence for his team heading into future matchups.

To take advantage of their new-found confidence, Coach Irwin says the Bulldogs will still have to work on taking care of the basketball.

Le Mars got at least 16 points from four different scorers in the win. Ben Martin led the scoring with 17. The Bulldogs are now 1-2 in MRAC action and 1-3 overall.
