Le Mars Boys Basketball Drops Ranked Matchup with Bishop Heelan

The Le Mars boys basketball team lost their first ranked matchup of the year on Monday night by a final of 53-30 to the sixth-ranked Crusaders of Bishop Heelan.

The performance by Le Mars was not fitting of a matchup with a top team in the state. The Bulldogs turned it over and were not intense throughout the matchup. Head Coach Dave Irwin says it was a rough showing all throughout the game.

The Bulldogs shot 28% from the field which did not help matters. The Bulldogs also allowed a 22-7 Bishop Heelan second quarter run that ultimately led to the lopsided margin. Coach Irwin says the Bulldogs have to hold teams better on defense to win games.

The main goal as the season progresses for any team in any sport is to see improvement. That improvement has not shown consistently enough for Le Mars’ liking. Coach Irwin says that has to change soon.

This matchup started a stretch of seven games in which six of them will be against a ranked opponent. Coach Irwin says the Bulldogs need some confidence heading into these games and knows he can not provide that for them.

The Bulldogs head to Harrisburg right away today. The Tigers are ranked in the top 10 in South Dakota’s Class AA. The Bulldogs will take a 2-4 record into the matchup.
