The Gehlen Catholic baseball team faced off with a top-15 foe in West Lyon in a doubleheader in Larchwood on Saturday. The Jays won the first game 7-6 but lost the second 3-2 in eight innings.
Gehlen Catholic’s offense had their way in the first game with two runs in the first two innings and a five-run fourth inning to get the win. Game two had a clutch single in the seventh by Jake Bogen to give the Jays the lead, but it was not enough to give them the win. Head coach Loi Kraft says the guys were fired up for game one but were out of energy by game two.
The Jays had a great pitching performance in game two going five and a third innings into a no-hitter with a pair of pitchers contributing to the effort. Coach Kraft says the pitching staff does what they are able to, and that is throw strikes.
The Gehlen defense was playing lights out making sliding and diving catches and great throws with ease to keep the Wildcats from getting on base. Coach Kraft says the Jays are versatile on defense making them a tough team to get on base against.
The win in game one extended their winning streak to nine games before the loss in game two ended it. The Jays play three games this week with a gauntlet of a tournament on Saturday in Granville with the bracket featuring Remsen St. Mary’s, Don Bosco, Kingsley-Pierson, and Akron-Westfield. Coach Kraft says the Jays should not get ahead of themselves and should focus on whatever game is up next.
Gehlen Catholic hosts Trinity Christian on Monday for a War Eagle Conference contest.
