The Le Mars Community football squad got off to a strong start in district play with a 14-7 road victory over the Spencer Tigers on Friday night.
The Bulldogs had to bounce back off a disappointing home loss to MOC-Floyd Valley in week four to get ready for district play. Head coach Ken Vigdal says the guys had to step up their level of play heading into this final half of the season.
A 14-7 score suggests that things were driven by the defense on Friday night. That was especially true for the Bulldogs who did not allow an offensive point to Spencer with the Tigers’ only score coming off a fumble return. Their defensive success was spearheaded by the play of Alex Allen who had four tackles for loss in helping shut down Spencer’s option offense.
On the offensive side, Le Mars saw plenty of success on the ground with 156 of their 202 rushing yards coming from their tandem of running backs in Jovany Kabongo and Jude Dougherty. Coach Vigdal says they really compliment each other well.
The Bulldogs take their 4-1 record into homecoming week with a matchup against Sioux City West. There will be plenty of extra festivities surrounding the game on Friday night, but Coach Vigdal says the guys need to make sure they have their primary focus on the game.
The Bulldogs and Wolverines will kick off at 7:00 PM from Jim Lorenzen Field in Le Mars. During halftime of the game, returning members from the 1973 state championship team will be honored and recognized.
