The Hinton girls wrestling team was not expected to exist when the girls wrestling season began this winter. Head coach Joel Bertrand says he was hoping a few girls would be up for the sharing agreement the school district had planned with Sergeant Bluff-Luton to give them an opportunity.
The coaches then held a meeting to gauge interest in those few girls who expressed interest. Coach Bertrand says more than expected showed up.
The program has been taking every opportunity to compete as it had to come up with a schedule at the last minute due to the desire for a program coming up quickly. The Blackhawks have taken advantage of those opportunities and have gone 2-3 in duals to this point. That has been impressive considering not a single girl had wrestled competitively before. Coach Bertrand says that meant the girls needed to understand that struggling was alright.
The Blackhawks return to action after the break on Thursday. Coach Bertrand says it will be a continual focus on the fundamentals heading into the last month of the season.
Hinton will wrestle at Central Lyon/George-Little Rock on Thursday in a single dual.
