The Akron-Westfield boys basketball team is off to a 6-2 start and is the only remaining unbeaten team in War Eagle Conference play sitting at 4-0 in the league. It is the best start for the Westerners since 2007-08, and head coach Chad Clay attributes it to a roster full of veteran senior leaders.
It is an unselfish group of players with guys that have a role, and they succeed in that role. Many players contribute regularly on the offensive end, and Coach Clay says that is because his players do not care who gets credit for Westerner points.
The Westerners have the best of both worlds with their starting lineup featuring size with Jackson Marnach and Kasey Nielsen who are both above 6’6” and an ability to spread the floor with Laytin Koch. Coach Clay says that makes them a really tough team to defend giving them something they can go to no matter what they are facing.
Three games are on the schedule this upcoming week for Akron-Westfield who still has to also play South O’Brien and Remsen St. Mary’s again and plays Hinton and MMCRU twice. Those are some tough matchups, but Coach Clay says as long as the guys stick with their theme, they will be alright.
The Westerners take on Alcester-Hudson and Trinity Christian this week on Thursday and Friday respectively.
