Silverthorn Announced as January Hot Shot
Mason Silverthorn, son of Tyler and Kristi, was honored as the Floyd Valley Healthcare Hot Shot for the January 6th Musketeer game against the Madison Capitols. Mason is a fun-loving 6 year-old that attends school in Le Mars and enjoys wrestling.
Mason was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency (PFFD), which was diagnosed at 20-weeks in-utero with the help of Dr. Sheila Holcomb, Floyd Valley Healthcare and Dr. Fleming, UnityPoint Maternal and Fetal Medicine specialist. PFFD is a rare (1.1 – 2.0 in 100,000 live births), complex birth defect characterized by the upper femur bone either being malformed or absent at birth, causing one leg to be shorter than the other. Most patients will require a combination of both surgical and orthotic intervention. Mason has had rotationplasty, a surgical procedure that preserves the lower leg to be attached to the thighbone. The ankle is then used as the “knee joint” in the use of his prosthetic leg.

The Sioux City Musketeers, in partnership with Floyd Valley Healthcare (FVH) began the Hot Shots program in 2018. This program was created with the goal of honoring FVH pediatric patients who have chronic health issues. They say they are excited to give children an opportunity to have a fun time with their family, cheer on the team and just enjoy being a kid for a night.
