The seventh-ranked Le Mars girls basketball team did something they had not done in seven years on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs beat fifth-ranked Bishop Heelan 50-46 to hand the Crusaders their first loss of the year. Head coach Sidney Baumgartner was a junior on that 2017 team and says it takes a special group of players to accomplish something like that.
The Bulldogs were struggling mightily in the first half after Bishop Heelan outscored Le Mars 23-7 in the second quarter using a 15-0 run to pull away. Le Mars trailed by 16 at the half and turned it on in the second half going 8-11 from the three-point arch. Coach Baumgartner says it just took a little tweak offensively to get things back on track.
That tweak allowed plenty of players to have an impact with four different Bulldogs hitting two-or-more threes in the second half. Coach Baumgartner says it was a total team win to knock off the Crusaders.
The Bulldogs have proven to be the comeback kids this season having to pull off plenty of double-digit second half comebacks. Coach Baumgartner says she never thinks the Bulldogs are out of a game until it is over.
Zoe Wittkop led Le Mars offensively with 13 points. The Bulldogs take a 12-3 record to Council Bluffs to take on Abraham Lincoln on Friday night. Bishop Heelan drops to 12-1 on the season.
