The MMCRU girls basketball team needed overtime and just one more point to defeat Gehlen Catholic 56-55 in a War Eagle Conference matchup in Marcus on Friday night.
Gehlen Catholic seemed to have MMCRU’s number for the first two-and-a-half quarters leading by as much as 12 points midway through the third. Some of that was Gehlen getting things clicking offensively, but MMCRU head coach Gillian Letsche says the Royals helped them out by not taking care of the ball.
Late in the third quarter, things changed in MMCRU’s favor thanks to Tia Tentinger. She scored the last nine points of the third quarter by herself to cut a 41-30 Gehlen lead down to 41-39 to end the third quarter. A couple of her baskets came off steals that showed off her defensive prowess. Coach Letsche says her leadership came in handy in that run.
MMCRU led 49-43 late in regulation but Gehlen outscored the Royals 7-1 to end regulation and send the game into overtime. MMCRU did enough late getting a basket with foul from Chloe Alesch that ultimately put them in front for good. Coach Letsche says the girls never gave up, and it showed on the scoreboard.
Two more games remain on the schedule for MMCRU before they take on Lawton-Bronson this weekend in the tournament. Coach Letsche liked what she saw on Friday and needs more of it to finish the year.
Tia Tentinger led the Royals with 19 points getting MMCRU to a 5-12 record overall and 2-7 in the conference. Gehlen Catholic fell to 2-18 and 1-8 in the league with a 28-point performance from Rysaiah Sitzmann to lead them.
