The Le Mars Community baseball team swept Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and ran their win streak to four consecutive games. The Bulldogs won the first game 13-2 in five innings and 3-2 in the second game.
The Bulldogs scored six runs in the third inning alone in the first game of the doubleheader. There was some help from the Yellow Jackets in the form of walks, but the Bulldog offense came to hit too. Head coach Trent Eckstaine says it was nice to see so many different guys contribute at the plate.
Game two of the doubleheader was a little trickier with Le Mars getting down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Bulldogs got all those runs back plus one more to give them the lead for good thanks to a run-scoring double by Chase Peterson. Coach Eckstaine says small ball was a factor in coming back as well, and it was good to see his guys show some versatility.
After an 0-3 start to the season, the four-game winning streak has been a welcome sight for the Bulldogs. Coach Eckstaine says no matter the opponent it was nice for his guys to take care of business like they did this week.
The Bulldogs will be much more battle tested come next week when they play five road games. Those road games are against a top-15 team in Class 4A, Sioux City East, then Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Thursday, and one with Storm Lake on Friday. Each team presents their challenges, but Coach Eckstaine is optimistic that his guys will have what it takes in a busy week.
Le Mars’ doubleheader with Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Thursday, May 30 can be heard on KLEM Radio with coverage starting at around 5:20. First pitch of game one will be at 5:30.
