By enrollment data, the Hinton softball team was the smallest program at Friday’s Le Mars softball tournament. That did not stop Hinton from splitting their games losing to Le Mars 3-0 and beating Western Christian 5-3.
Being the small fish at the tournament, the Blackhawks knew they would be tested well by both teams they faced. The Blackhawk offense struggled at the plate against Le Mars only picking up one hit against Bulldog pitching. Head coach Jennifer Jacobs-List says seeing pitching like that will help make her hitters better in the long run.
In their second game, Hinton had to claw back and score some runs late to beat the Wolfpack. The win certainly was not pretty for Hinton who had to grind out at-bats and runs just to pick up the victory. Coach Jacobs-List says she was proud of the girls for battling through a game like that to get the win.
Things will not get easier for the Blackhawks next week who play four games in five days including a matchup with MOC-Floyd Valley on Tuesday. Coach Jacobs-List says with this young of a team, it is important to remind them that they need to pace themselves since it is still the first half of June.
Hinton improved to 8-5 overall with their games in the tournament. Three of their four games are on the road next week heading back home on Friday, June 14 to take on Harris-Lake Park.
