ICE CREAM DAYS

Saturday at Ice Cream Days is the biggest of them all.  Margaret Catton says after the morning parade – there’s activities throughout the morning and afternoon at the Olson Center.

There’s also a magic show and music from a barbershop quartet, the Siouxland Discovery Chorus. The Ice Cream Bash is the evening’s headline event.

This is the 30th year celebration of Ice Cream Days.  It was also 30 years ago that the Iowa Legislature passed a resolution declaring Le Mars as the Ice Cream Capital of the World.

FARM BUILDING FIRE

Three fire departments were called to a fire at Plymouth Dairy, south of Le Mars.  Friday afternoon a hay barn at the dairy was reportedly ablaze.  Le Mars Fire Rescue, and the Hinton and Merrill fire departments responded.

ROCK RAPIDS FATAL

There was a fatal accident in Rock Rapids, in Lyon County Friday.  The Iowa State Patrol says a head-on collision occurred along the 1900 block of U.S. Highway 75 around 4:30 p.m.  A northbound vehicle driven by 48 year old Joni Wulf of Rock Rapids was driving left of the center line.  A southbound car driven by 29 year old Megan Klapperich of Orange City swerved to avoid contact, but the two vehicles collided in the northbound lane.  Wulf died at the scene of the crash.  Klapperich was injured, and taken by helicopter to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls.  The Lyon County Sheriffs Office, Rock Rapids Fire Department, Lyon County EMS, and the Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.

TWO MORE BIRD FLU CASES AT NORTHWEST IOWA DAIRY FARMS

There have been two more avian influenza cases noted in northwest Iowa dairy herds.  One case is in a Plymouth County dairy and the other is in a Sioux County dairy.

Dairy and poultry  farmers are urged to step up their biosecurity practices and protocols to protect their flocks and herds. Farmers or farm workers who interact regularly with both dairy and poultry or who interact frequently with other farm workers in poultry or dairy, should take extra precautions to limit possible transmissions.

There is no concern about the safety of pasteurized milk or dairy products.

WIC PROGRAM GROCERIES CAN NOW BE ORDERED ONLINE

Families in Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska that take part in the Women, Infants, and Children program can now use their cards to shop online at most Hy-Vee stores in the state as part of a pilot program. Kate Franken, a Midwest WIC director, says shopping with young children can be challenging, and without an online option, fewer healthy foods are accessible.

Franken says the pilot program was launched in February at one Hy-Vee store in each state and it’s seen great success.

Franken says grocery delivery is available from Hy-Vee for an additional fee, which cannot be paid for using WIC benefits.
