No. 3 Akron-Westfield Baseball finishes runner-up in Spalding Catholic Tournament

The third-ranked Akron-Westfield baseball team went 2-1 in Granville on Friday and Saturday finishing as runner-up of the Spalding Catholic Baseball Tournament.

On Saturday, the Westerners started out with a familiar foe in the Gehlen Catholic Jays. The Westerners beat the Jays 5-3 using a big five-run fourth inning to take the lead for good. The inning followed Gehlen Catholic going up 2-0 in the first three innings, and head coach Gordon Johnson says it was nice to see the guys respond to an early deficit.

In the championship game, the Westerners picked up just one hit in a 7-0 loss to Unity Christian. Akron-Westfield’s only hit came right off the bat from Carter Wilken in the first inning and could only reach on free passes for the rest of the game. Coach Johnson says losses happen in baseball, and it is important that a team uses them to improve.

Even for a top team in the state, there will be times where they will face a deficit this season. Coach Johnson wants his guys to get better at staying loose and not letting a deficit affect their play too much.

The Westerners are now 16-2 on the season following the Spalding Tournament.
