The Le Mars Community softball team ended their non-conference regular season schedule with a 2-0 win at Sioux Center on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs looked like they would score a boatload of runs right away getting the bases loaded with nobody out to start the game. A strikeout and two groundouts later, and the Bulldogs were left with nothing to show for their efforts. Le Mars head coach Brooke Berkenpas says she reminded the girls that things would work out in the end.
Le Mars played with a lot of confidence in the fact that they would get the runs they needed eventually because they had Brenna Leraas doing work in the circle. The junior twirled another shutout allowing just two hits and striking out 12 Warriors. Coach Berkenpas says Leraas has been so reliable all season, and that has helped bolster a strong 1-2 punch in the circle.
Le Mars got their two runs in the top of the sixth inning after the inning started with a leadoff double from Charli Grosenheider. Sarah Brown then put a ball in play to the outfield that resulted in an error and scored Grosenheider. Addi Bogh later drove in Brown to give the Bulldogs their two runs. Coach Berkenpas says the mood in the dugout changed when Grosenheider led off the inning with the double.
Four more games separate Le Mars and their tournament opener against Humboldt. Coaches always talk about playing your best softball at this point in the season, and Coach Berkenpas says her team is maybe just a few tweaks away from getting there.
The Bulldogs play on back-to-back days hosting Bishop Heelan for an MRAC doubleheader. You can listen to both games on KLEM starting at 5:30 tonight.
