The Remsen St. Mary’s baseball continued their run of dominance with their ninth consecutive state tournament qualification. It comes after an 8-0 over Coon Rapids-Bayard in Cherokee on Tuesday night.
The Hawks are the defending state champions and had graduated many starters off last year’s team. Remsen St. Mary’s heard the doubters who said that the Hawks would not be able to do it again after last year’s graduating class. Head coach Dean Harpenau says he is happy the guys got the job done using that doubt as fuel for the fire.
It would not take long for the Hawks to take the lead that would last for the whole game. Landon Waldschmitt started things off with a hit, and Daenon Loucks brought him in with a triple. Coach Harpenau says it was big to set the tone early after failing to do it against Woodbine on Saturday.
Loucks went on to drive in two runs and record two extra-base hits for the game. While that was happening, Hunter Pick was going 0-2, but he drove in two runs utilizing sacrifice opportunities well. It has been a nice run for Pick who drove in the tying run in the sixth against Woodbine. Coach Harpenau says he has been doing what senior leaders do best.
Collin Homan got the start on the bump and did not disappoint. He struck out six while allowing just two hits and a walk in a complete-game shutout effort. Coach Harpenau says Homan’s pin-point accuracy helped keep the Crusader batters off the scoreboard.
The Hawks enter the state tournament as the defending state champions which will put a target on their back for sure. Coach Harpenau says the guys are not going in with too much confidence and will just play the games as they come in Carroll.
The Hawks are now 23-4 on the season heading into the state tournament. Their nine-year state qualification streak ranks second all-time in state history behind only Newman Catholic who qualified for state for 13-straight seasons (2008-2020).
