Remsen St. Mary’s football missed out on the UNI-Dome for the first time since 2018 last season when they fell to the eventual state champs from Bishop Garrigan.
This year, there are not very many question marks for the Hawks who return their starting QB, top rusher, top receiver, top tackler, their leader in sacks, and their leader in interceptions. Head coach Tim Osterman says the next question will be who will be the depth that the Hawks need to have success.
The Hawks only graduated three seniors, but two of them made up the majority of their offensive and defensive line. Coach Osterman says it took some moving around, but he is confident in the guys that will be filling those roles this season.
While the Hawks return their starting quarterback in Landon Waldschmitt, an extra wrinkle was added to that position with the fact that Daenon Loucks is eligible for the whole season this year. He had to sit most of last season due to transfer rule, but Coach Osterman says he will be available this year to give the Hawks an extra gear in their offense.
Remsen St. Mary’s defense proved to be one of the best in the state last season. The Hawks pitched a shutout and held three different opponents to single digits while forcing 18 interceptions. Coach Osterman says that does not mean the Hawks can rest on their laurels and stop improving on that side of the ball.
Harris-Lake Park and Remsen St. Mary’s know each other too well at this point. The Hawks’ week one opponent has competed with them six times over the last four years with two of those matchups in the postseason. Coach Osterman knows that means his guys will have their hands full right off the bat.
Remsen St. Mary’s goal is to get back to the UNI-Dome and prove last year was the fluke. The preseason fourth-ranked team knows what it takes to get that done having done it many times over the last few seasons. Coach Osterman says the key is not getting too far ahead of the schedule and remaining focused on going 1-0 every week of the season.
Remsen St. Mary’s matchup with Harris-Lake Park is set for Friday, August 30 at 7:00 PM in Lake Park.
