The Gehlen Catholic volleyball team recorded its first losing season since 1995 with last year’s 13-14 showing. It is a spot the 2024 Jays do not want to bring the program back to ever again.
Gehlen Catholic head coach Dan Goebel says the girls have shown that desire to win early in the season. He says things already feel like they are midway through the season with the cohesiveness and the quality of play in practice so far.
Gehlen will have a few key pieces to replace in their rotations. The Jays run a two-setter rotation, and one of those setters, Ellen Hunt, graduated. That leaves a spot alongside senior Rysaiah Sitzmann for an up-and-coming freshman to step into the role. Coach Goebel says the match is great for the senior to bring along a freshman and show her the ways.
The Jays also graduate a libero in Larissa Pohlen with another strong back-row presence graduating in Aspen Mosher. Coach Goebel says two players with the same name will be strong replacements, and it is now a matter of who wears the different color jersey.
Gehlen Catholic is now putting the finishing touches on things before competition starts. Coach Goebel says those finishing touches include communication and making sure everybody knows where each other needs to be on the court.
The Jays open their season at the Sheldon Early Bird Tournament today. That tournament starts at 4:30 PM.
