The Gehlen Catholic volleyball team remained perfect in War Eagle Conference play winning a barn-burner five set matchup with Remsen St. Mary’s on Thursday night.
The Jays won the first, third, and fifth sets to pick up the victory. Set one made it look like there might not even be a fourth set. The Jays got up big and stayed in front with a 25-13 drubbing in the first set. Gehlen Catholic head coach Dan Goebel says the girls were executing well, but that seemed to have lulled them into a false sense of security in set two.
Gehlen bounced back with a set three win and had a 21-15 lead in the fourth set before Remsen St. Mary’s scored 11 of the final 14 points to steal the set. Coach Goebel says a few small uncharacteristic mistakes proved costly.
Gehlen Catholic’s offensive attack has proven to be dangerous whether it is with Aurora Goebel who racked up 23 kills on Thursday or the cadre of strong hitters behind her. Coach Goebel says while the numbers were good offensively, he felt the connection between setters and hitters was just a little off.
The Jays are now 3-0 in the War Eagle Conference and 6-4 overall, but they still are nowhere near where they want to be. Coach Goebel says some basic things need to be worked through to get the Jays closer to where they want to be.
Gehlen Catholic is at Harris-Lake Park on Tuesday next week. Remsen St. Mary’s fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. They will be next in action a week from Saturday in Algona at the CYO Tournament.
