The Northwest Iowa National Invitational men’s team title went the way of a newcomer to the field this week.
Oklahoma City University made their debut in the tournament and won it with the team shooting just one stroke over par for the 54-hole tournament. The Stars were 11 strokes under par after the first 36 holes and had a commanding lead of 21 strokes over second-place finisher Texas Wesleyan. Head coach Blake Trimble says while things got hairy late, he was proud of the guys for finishing and coming away with the win.
With it being Oklahoma City’s first time in Le Mars, there were a lot of things they had to get used to with the new course. That unfamiliarity paired with some heavy winds the wreaked havoc on their last 36 holes made for an interesting week. Coach Trimble says with all of that factored in, he was very proud of the way the guys adjusted and competed.
Being newbies to the tournament, the Stars got to experience everything Le Mars has to offer for the first time. Coach Trimble says everything surrounding the tournament made it feel like a big deal and made it fun for his team.
The first experience for Oklahoma City certainly will not be the last. Coach Trimble says every bit lived up to what he had heard going into the tournament. He says the Stars will come back to Le Mars as much as we will have them.
Oklahoma City opened the season ranked #18 in the country. Both their season-opening tournaments have now ended in wins.
