WESTFIELD DRAINAGE REPAIRS

The Plymouth County Drainage Board Tuesday authorized the county engineer to take steps to clear and repair parts of a five mile drainage near Westfield.  County Engineer Tom Rohe reported to the board that last week, he inspected the area to assess damages from this year’s flood.  The drainage ditch extends from north of Westfield, across Highways 12 and 3, southwest to the Big Sioux River.  Rohe said there are numerous places along the ditch that are clogged with fallen trees or branches, and in one area, corn stalks.  The flood also caused some berms to be eroded.  One, in one case, washing out over 500 feet of the barrier.  Rohe proposed removing and burning trees and branches which obstruct the channel.  The Drainage Board passed a motion to authorize the work, with a budget of up to 20-thousand dollars.

MANURE SPILL NEAR DOON

The DNR Field Office in Spencer received a complaint earlier this week concerning a manure release into a tributary of the Rock River southwest of Doon. DNR staff confirmed that the manure flowed across a field, entering an unnamed tributary of the Rock River.  No fish were observed in the tributary and there was no observed impact in the Rock River.

The manure originated from Winding Meadows Dairy in Rock Valley. Jochum Agri-Service was land applying the manure by an umbilical hose in a field approximately two miles southeast of the dairy. Company representatives stated that a hose coupling broke, and approximately two to three thousand gallons of manure spilled. Earthen berms were placed across the flow path, but the manure still entered the stream in an adjacent field.
