Short-handed Akron-Westfield Football hoping to finish season strong after 0-5 start

The Akron-Westfield football team has fallen on more hard luck than any team in the area. The Westerners dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 49-20 loss last week to Gehlen Catholic.

Akron-Westfield stuck around in the first half with the Jays who are ranked eighth in the state this week. The feat was impressive considering how dinged up the Westerners were. Akron-Westfield head coach John Sievert says it is tough to build back up when the numbers just are not there.

The injuries have not totally incapacitated the Westerners who are seeing a mix of underclassmen and veteran players on the field at the same time. Coach Sievert says that experience will pay off in the next few years and also allow his seniors to be leaders this year.

The Akron-Westfield pass attack has been the strong suit offensively. That was the case again against the Jays with Tatum Wilken and Brock Hansen connecting seven times for 80 yards and a touchdown through the air. Coach Sievert that relationship has come about by necessity, but it has made some strides this season.

While the Westerners are 0-5 and 0-3 in the district, the playoffs are not out of the picture yet. The path has been made simple to explain but tougher to do. The Westerners have to win out to make the postseason. That starts this week at MMCRU for the Royals’ homecoming. Coach Sievert says it is going to have to take a lot of guys stepping up to the plate if the Westerners are to continue on.

Kickoff is at 7:00 PM on Friday night in Marcus.
