Hinton Volleyball wins three hard-fought matches towards Le Mars Invitational title

The No. 10 Hinton volleyball team won three hard-fought matches at the Le Mars Invitational to take home the title.

The evening did not start great dropping the first set to No. 12 Sergeant Bluff-Luton, but the Blackhawks were able to get back on the right track quickly. The Blackhawks won the second and third sets convincingly to get into the win column. Hinton co-head coach Robin Mohr says getting back on the right track just came down to executing on fundamentals.

A large portion of Hinton’s offensive success came from Karlyn Kovarna who totaled 15 kills against Sergeant Bluff-Luton and 20 kills in the title match against Le Mars. With Bailey Boeve out for the year, it has forced the Blackhawks to make some changes. Coach Mohr says Kovarna and all the girls have adapted to those changes well.

The Blackhawks had to battle throughout the night. Bouncing back from first set losses to Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Le Mars were crucial towards winning the championship. The Blackhawks also stared match point down twice against the Bulldogs and won the third set 21-19 having plenty more match points late in that set. Coach Mohr says the confidence level is high with the girls, and it showed in those instances.

The road continues for Hinton who will try to lock up a conference title with some big matchups including one against Gehlen Catholic next week. Coach Mohr says continuing to compete on the court is the best way for this team to get better.

Hinton’s record now sits at 14-4 following the tournament victories.
