The Le Mars Community boys wrestling season is off and rolling with a 1-1 record in their first dual competition and competing at a tough tournament over the weekend.
The Bulldogs were dinged up all of last year, and this year they graduate a lot of that senior talent that got to compete on the mat. That meant head coach Shane Hessenius needed to grow interest in the program once again. He says that has happened, and it has created a great atmosphere in the wrestling room.
The guys that do return bring a wealth of knowledge that can be distributed to the younger wrestlers. Coach Hessenius says it is like there are extra coaches on his staff during some practices.
Wrestling is an interesting sport considering there is an individual match that impacts a team score. In Le Mars’ season-opening duals in Council Bluffs on Thursday, there were times where guys were getting beaten, but they were not getting pinned. Coach Hessenius says that is so big because it helps keep the team in a dual.
The Bulldogs are coming off a tough performance at a very good tournament over the weekend. Regardless of the outcome, Coach Hessenius says the Bulldogs want to go to tournaments like that to better test them down the road.
The Bulldogs are back in action tonight at a double dual in Sioux Center.
