Gehlen Catholic basketball teams take tough losses at Unity Christian

The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team dropped their second-straight game with a 59-39 loss at Unity Christian on Thursday night.

The Jays fell behind early to a very good team, and it was very tough to come back. Gehlen fell behind 21-6 at the end of the first and was down 26 points at halftime. Head coach Brandon Schaecher says the girls were not fully ready to go at the start of the game.

Thankfully, the Jays never wavered and actually outscored the Knights 22-16 in the second half. Coach Schaecher says it was nice to see his team battle back when the scoreboard says they should have quit.

The Jays now sit at 3-5 after their second-straight loss. In both games in the losing skid, the Jays failed to get off to good starts. Coach Schaecher says that has to change before their conference opener in their next game.

The Jays head to Hartley tonight to start conference play against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

The Gehlen Catholic boys did not fair well either against second-ranked Unity Christian dropping their game with the Knights 79-31.

The Jays had a tall order against a team that was a state semifinalist in Class 2A last year. They did not bat an eye at the challenge of facing off with a good team and jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game. Head coach Ryan Wiltgen says his guys started the game with confidence.

After Gehlen led 15-14 late in the first quarter, the Knights outscored the Jays 38-6 to finish the half and take a 52-21 lead into the break. Coach Wiltgen says the guys played into Unity’s up-tempo pace and could not get back in control.

After a pair of losses to bigger schools, the Jays are looking forward to getting conference play started against a school in their class. Coach Wiltgen hopes the guys take some lessons into their next game.

The Jays are at Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn tonight to start the War Eagle Conference schedule.
