The Gehlen Catholic girls basketball team got 2025 off to a great start on Friday night beating MMCRU 60-58.
Both sides had late leads with MMCRU having a lead as late as three minutes to go, but Gehlen Catholic never backed down. Gehlen head coach Brandon Schaecher says he was pleased with the composure of his girls in those late moments.
MMCRU was winless heading into the game but put up a strong fight getting into a rhythm defensively. Head coach Gillian Letsche says that paired with some consistent offense will take her team far.
The Jays had to get many different players involved and finished with four different players with 10-or-more points. Coach Schaecher says the Jays could finally get going offensively once they took care of the ball.
MMCRU falls to 0-7 on the season but is showing signs that they are on the path toward their first win. Coach Letsche says her team needs to play with the same mentality again and again.
The Jays are now 4-7 and have gotten out of their four-game losing skid. Coach Schaecher says he wants this to be a launching pad toward more success in the future.
The Jays are in non-conference play on Tuesday at Boyden-Hull. The Royals host River Valley tonight in Remsen.
