Le Mars boys basketball wins first game of the year with seven-point edge over Sioux Center

The Le Mars Community boys basketball team broke out of their winless start to the year with a 67-60 win over Sioux Center on Monday night.

The point of emphasis for Le Mars, especially after their last two losses, was improving on the defensive side. Le Mars had allowed opponents to score nearly 70 points per game heading into the matchup with Sioux Center. Le Mars head coach Cody Dyhrkopp says they switched up their defense, and his guys executed on it well.

Le Mars held the Warriors to just 25 points in the first half allowing them to take a comfortable lead into the second half and build on it from there. The heavy lifting on building that lead was done by Tate Murphy who finished the game with 28 points and 18 of those came in the third quarter. Coach Dyhrkopp says he was getting up the floor, and guys were finding him.

Le Mars’ record is now at 1-6 which finally gets a monkey off their back that has been with them for the first bit of the season. Coach Dyhrkopp says it is nice to get this one, but the guys have to continue to improve getting back to work to prepare for some more tough games.

The Bulldogs host MOC-Floyd Valley and are at Storm Lake on Thursday and Friday this week. Both of those games can be heard on KLEM.
