Gehlen Catholic boys basketball dominate the glass in win over Akron-Westfield

The Gehlen Catholic boys finished off a regular season sweep of Akron-Westfield with a 55-49 win in Akron on Tuesday night.

It took about a quarter and a half for the Jays to get going offensively. Once the inside post opportunities presented themselves, the Jays were ready to go. Gehlen Catholic head coach Ryan Wiltgen says that sparked his offense in a big way.

The Gehlen offense was helped in a major way by many second chances coming from offensive rebounds. Akron-Westfield head coach Steven Husk says his guys took some risks that left them in bad positions for rebounds.

Mason Small ended up finishing with 25 of Gehlen’s 55 points in the win. Coach Wiltgen says Small was crushing the offensive glass.

After taking an 11-point lead it looked like the Jays would coast to the win, but Akron-Westfield got it back to within four points late in the game. Coach Husk says he knew the guys would not give up because they have not all season.

The Jays improve to 12-6 on the season and 6-1 in the War Eagle Conference. Things continue to get tougher for the Jays who host No. 7 Remsen St. Mary’s on Friday. Coach Wiltgen says his guys will have to take good percentage shots to have a chance in that game.

Akron-Westfield dropped to 5-12 with the loss and 4-4 in the War Eagle Conference.
