The Remsen St. Mary’s girls basketball team started strong and polished off the Jays with a 45-36 win in Le Mars on Friday night.
It was evident from the first few possessions that things would go rough for the Jays. After playing well on Thursday, Gehlen did not have the same fire they played with to beat Alta-Aurelia. Head coach Brandon Schaecher says his girls were search for that energy all game long.
Remsen St. Mary’s countered with plenty of energy on the defensive side of the ball. The Hawks had a plan to make life tough for Gehlen’s top scorer Rysaiah Sitzmann. She scored 17 points, but it was a struggle to get those points on her stat-line. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Scott Willman says he was impressed by the defensive effort of a couple of freshmen.
While that was going on, Hallie Bunkers continued to put the ball through the net. Hallie Bunkers scored 22 points and finished off a week in which she averaged nearly 24 points per game over these three games. Coach Willman says her ability to get high-percentage looks makes her tough to defend.
Gehlen Catholic fell to 9-11 on the season and 2-6 in the War Eagle Conference. Only two games remain on Gehlen’s schedule before the regional tournament. Coach Schaecher says it will be important to get things polished off with these last two games before tournament time.
Remsen St. Mary’s improved to 10-8 on the season and 4-4 in the conference with the win. The Hawks are playing some really good basketball as of late, and Coach Scott Willman wants that to continue into their games with some opponents that they struggled with earlier in the year.
Remsen St. Mary’s takes on Trinity Christian next in Remsen on Thursday, February 6. Gehlen Catholic will be at South O’Brien next on Friday, February 7 in a game you can hear on KLEM.
