No. 3 Hinton girls basketball opens tournament with convincing win over South Central Calhoun

The third-ranked Hinton girls basketball team started their tournament run to the Well with a dominant 80-33 regional quarterfinal win at home over South Central Calhoun.

Hinton had a week of rest behind them in preparation for this game, and they had to very different styles of game. Hinton’s last game finished with a buzzer-beating basket over a top-five opponent in Cherokee. Head coach Matt Leary says the girls were still able to keep the intensity up for this game as well.

Scoring 80 points in a game means the offense was firing on all cylinders. Four Blackhawks scored at least 12 points, and the team dished out 23 assists as a unit. Coach Leary says his team likes to do the little things to win games.

Hinton’s defense came to play to start the postseason holding the Titans to under 30% shooting from the field and forced 31 turnovers. Coach Leary says the girls can play some great defense when they put their mind to it.

Hinton is favored in most of their postseason matchups this year so preparing themselves for more competitive later games is a challenge. Coach Leary says the girls are going to be well-tested this week before they get back on the court on Friday.

Hinton’s next matchup is Friday, February 21 at 7:00 PM when they take on the Wolves of IKM-Manning in a regional semifinal in Hinton.
