MMCRU boys basketball wins first-ever consolidated district title

The third-ranked MMCRU boys basketball team won their first-ever district championship as the Royals defeated Newell-Fonda 75-53 on Tuesday at Sioux Central.

The victory signifies the culmination of a lot of hard work and tough outcomes for the Royals over the last few years. Head coach Cam Kuchel has been the head coach for seven years. He says winning the district title makes all those hard times and all the work put in worth it.

The Royals have proven their depth time and time again throughout the season. Ten guys got on the court in the first quarter of the game and all 10 had a hand in some way. Coach Kuchel says every guy has a role, and they all fill that role well.

The Royals were able to take a nine-point lead early on thanks to the hot shooting of Wyatt Alesch. He scored 26 points on Thursday night and had 21 points against Newell-Fonda with 10 of those coming in the first quarter. Coach Kuchel says Alesch is playing with a lot of confidence.

MMCRU improves to 23-2 on the season and is one win away from the state tournament where neither school district has been in 33 years. The Royals will take on a Boyden-Hull team that knows their way to Wells Fargo Arena like the back of their hand. Coach Kuchel says the guys will have to be ready for a tough battle on Saturday night.

The game will be played at Sioux Center High School on Saturday, March 1. KLEM Radio will broadcast the game live with pregame coverage getting started at 6:45 PM. Tip-off will follow at 7:00 PM.
