Gehlen Catholic boys golf takes season-opening matchup by one stroke over Akron-Westfield

The Gehlen Catholic boys golf team got their season started in thrilling fashion beating Akron-Westfield by one stroke with a score of 162-163 on Friday in Le Mars.

These two programs have been at the state tournament a couple of times in the last few seasons, so it promised to be a tough matchup. However, historically the Westerners have always had the upper hand. That may have been on the Jays’ minds early in the match, but head coach Nathan Carlson says they did a good job of putting it to the back of their minds quickly.

The Jays returned some veteran presence in the likes of Carson Arens and Dylan Lubben who shot 39 and 40 respectively in the victory. Coach Carlson says those returners from last year’s state tournament team have showed their leadership frequently to start the season.

With so many good golfers on the team, it can be tough mentally for that golfer that is good but not good enough to beat some of his teammates. Coach Carlson is trying to remind that golfer early on that they are still a very good golfer and to not change anything with how they play.

The Jays get back on the course today when they take on Hinton at Deer Run Golf Course.
