Bill to Ban Carbon Capture Pipelines Goes to To Governor Reynolds; Renewable Fuels Group Reacts
Today the Iowa Senate voted 27-22 to pass House File 639. The bill, if signed by Govenor Reynolds, woud ban carbon capture and sequestration projects in the state. Republican Senators who voted for the bill said they wanted to protect landowner rights and prevent the possiblity of the state using eminent domain to help the Summit Carbon Capture pipeline project move forward.
The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) Executive Director Monte Shaw said he was deeply disapointed by the outcome of the vote.
He said farmers are desperate to find new markets and CCS is the key to unlocking massive new demand for ethanol and corn around the world. Shaw says the IRFA sought to work on a middle ground approach that enhanced landowner rights and protections.
Landowners who have opposed the use of eminent domain to run the Summit Carbon Capture Pipeline through their land, applauded the vote.
