NEW SITE CONSIDERED FOR LE MARS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Le Mars School Board is considering a land exchange to build a new elementary school, according a proposal the board approved at its regular meeting this week.

The plan originally called for the school to be built on district-owned land near the middle/high school complex. However, the land exchange with Dogwood Properties would mean the district would swap 17 acres next to 11th Street SW and 6th Avenue SW at 12th Street . . . for 30 acres, plus additional funds. Those funds would be used for the exchange of property located at the south end of Central Ave along 18th street.

Le Mars School District Superintendent Dr. Steven Webner

Le Mars School Superintendent Dr. Steve Webner said at Tuesday’s school board meeting stakeholders have voiced concerns about the size of 17 acre parcel of land.

Webner also said the new plot of land would solve some traffic issues. Webner added that the exchange would have no effect on tax payers and it would provide the district with options to build in the future.

The Le Mars School Board has set a public forum to discuss the land exchange for June 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Le Mars High School Little Theater.
