The Gehlen Catholic softball team capped off a perfect start to the season improving to 3-0 with a 10-6 win at George-Little Rock on Friday night.
The Jays only recorded three hits to score their 10 runs in the victory. They were helped by George-Little Rock pitching who allowed 15 walks to Gehlen hitters. Head coach Tony Kerkvliet says it is hard to get into a rhythm offensively when the opposing pitcher does not have the best control.
Through all of that, the Jays took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth giving them a nice cushion. Coach Kerkvliet says that allowed the team to breathe a little easier early.
Unfortunately, the Jays needed every run of that lead giving up five runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined. Most of those runs were aided by a total of four fielding errors. Coach Kerkvliet says the girls played not to lose late in the game.
Thankfully, the Jays held on and helped out their cause further in the seventh scoring four runs to secure the win. Gehlen Catholic will take a 3-0 record into their second week of the season which proves to be even busier. Coach Kerkvliet says the girls have to tighten the mistakes up on defense if they want to have a chance in their next games.
Gehlen Catholic starts this busy week at home against Remsen St. Mary’s tonight.
