The Hinton softball team convincingly defeated Gehlen Catholic on Wednesday night by the score of 14-0 in four innings.
Hinton kept the onslaught going throughout their turns at the plate thanks to an aggressive but deliberate approach at the plate. The Blackhawks have been one of the best teams in limiting strikeouts at the plate, and they did that again striking out only two times against Gehlen pitching. Head coach Jennifer Jacobs-List says that approach requires some fight at times at the plate.
Kayla Sypersma stole the show for the Blackhawks allowing just two hits and pitching a shutout in the circle. At the plate, Sypersma smacked two doubles and drove in four runs to help spark the Blackhawk offense. Coach Jacobs-List says Sypersma’s hard work has been paying off early in the season.
Meanwhile, Gehlen hitters could not get into any kind of groove against Sypersma. Gehlen Catholic head coach Tony Kerkvliet says it is a bit puzzling as to why the team has struggled lately offensively.
This game starts a stretch of four-straight days with a game for the Jays. They will continue things at Akron-Westfield tonight, and Coach Kerkvliet says they will need to quickly put this game behind them to get back on the right track.
Hinton also will keep playing games through the weekend continuing their season at Unity Christian tonight. Coach Jacobs-List says she needs her team to take things one game at a time, and the results will work out.
Hinton improved to 5-1 with the loss while Gehlen Catholic fell to 3-1 on the season.
