Big Brothers Big Sisters Welcomes New Executive Director

A Hinton resident has been named as the new Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland. Ciarra Prather will join the organization effective June 30th.

Prather succeeds Kristie Arlt, who has served in the role for the past seven years and will be relocating to Omaha.

Ciarra is a former Powell Broadcasting employee and most recently served as a Marketing Consultant for Nexstar Media.

Commenting on her appointment, Prather said “I’m honored to lead Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland and look forward to building on the strong foundation Kristie has created.”

 

Sioux City Sports Complex Proposal

The City Council in Sioux City will consider a proposal Monday from Siouxland Developers to build a sports complex at 3400 Line Drive near the Lewis and Clark Park Baseball Stadium.

The Council agenda information says Siouxland Developers LLC plans to construct  a new sports complex for Siouxland Sports Academy to operate.

The facility will provide year-round athletic opportunities for the region, including youth sports training, multi-sport leagues and tournaments, athletic showcase events, facility rentals, and coaching clinics.

The developer intends to purchase the property for $50,000 and invest $5 million to construct the 65,000 square foot multi-sport complex. It would include five basketball courts, nine volleyball courts, a batting cage, state-of-the-art weight room, dance academy, upscale concessions area, locker rooms, offices, and outdoor patio seating.

The city will allow patrons to use the existing city-owned parking lot and will receive $5,000 per year from the developer for use of the lot.  If approved, construction of the building is expected to begin in August and be completed by the end of 2026.

 

Coyote Sighting

The Kingsley Police Department has issued a warning after a coyote was spotted in town earlier this week. The Department’s Facebook page says the coyote was attacking a pet on a porch in Kingsley that had its porch light on. The post advises residents with small pets to be cautious if you let them out later in the evening or early morning.

 

Oyens Park Fundraiser Planned

The Oyens Community Development Committee hopes to reach its goal to provide a park and playground for their community with a fundraiser this weekend. The event is planned for tonight (Saturday, June 7,) at the Avalon Ballroom in Remsen featuring the band Fair to Compare. Nicole Owen, the President of the committee and coordinator of the event, says with approximately 11-thousand dollars in the bank so far, they hope to raise an additional 10-thousand dollars to help complete the project.

Admission for the event will be $10. The night will include food for a free-will donation, items on a silent auction, and a raffle to play 9 different golf courses.

The park will be located on the corner of Park Street and Catholic Street, on a green space just behind the well house in Oyens.
