Another Le Mars City Council Election Announcement
There’s been another candidate announcement for a seat on the Le Mars City Council.  Beth Meyer, Senior Manager of the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor, says she’s running for the At-Large Council seat now held by Clark Goodchild.
In a Facebook post, Meyer said, quoting now: “After much thought and personal reflection, through community interactions and involvement, I have decided to run for the At-Large seat for the Le Mars City Council.”  The election will take place November 4th.
Earlier this week, we reported that Jacque Perez announced through social media that she is also running for Le Mars City Council for the Ward 1 seat.
White Horse Mounted Patrol to Perform During Ice Cream Days Parade
The White Horse Mounted Patrol
The famed White Horse Mounted Patrol will be among several Shrine units performing in the Saturday morning Ice Cream Days Parade in Le Mars.
Rich Porter, the Captain and Treasurer of the White Horse unit, says being part of the Mounted Patrol is a big commitment.
Porter has been riding with the White Horse Mounted Patrol for 33 years.
The Patrol was formed in 1920 by a group of Stockyard’s employees, who were also members of the Shrine.
Rich Porter says these are special horses.

The crowd-pleasing equestrian unit is part of the overall mission of the Shrine.

Denny Dorr is a Le Mars member of the White Horse Mounted Patrol.

The Ice Cream Days Parade begins at 9:30 Saturday morning featuring close to 90 units.  It will run from 8th Street South, down Central Avenue, through the downtown, ending at 2nd Street North.

KLEM will broadcast the parade, both on the radio and with a live video stream on the KLEM YouTube channel.

Despite tariffs, Corn Exports are Well Above Average
Corn in the field

Iowa is the nation’s top corn-producing state and Iowa farmers harvested over two-point-six BILLION bushels of corn last year — the second largest crop ever. Iowa State University ag economist Chad Hart says despite tariff challenges, U-S corn exports for the first five months of the year hit a three year high.

The U-S-D-A has predicted a slight drop in soybean sales this year, but not as much as feared due to the lack of sales to China. Reports indicate corn exports remained well above average through early June.

Hart says in June, it’s typically Brazil and Argentina that dominate global sales of feed grains. Iowa typically accounts for about eight to nine percent of all U-S agricultural exports. California’s the only state that exports more agricultural products.

Heat index of 110-degrees Possible This First Weekend of Summer

Iowans may need to rethink their weekend outdoor plans, as forecasters say the entire state will be under an Extreme Heat Watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday night. Meteorologist Brooke Hagenhoff, at the National Weather Service, says Saturday will be the first full day of summer, and the hot-and-muggy weather will arrive right on time.

Even after the sun goes down on Saturday night, she predicts there will be little relief from the steamy conditions.

A storm front may arrive Monday which she says may knock down the heat. As for the weekend ahead, she suggests you drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
