After missing out on the title last year, the top-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s baseball team won the Spalding Tournament Championship with a 9-4 win over Don Bosco on Saturday in Granville.
The Hawk offense averaged nearly 10 runs a game over the duration of three games at the tournament. The runs came however the Hawks wanted most of the time. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Dean Harpenau says keeping the momentum going with the bottom of the order has been huge.
Hawk pitchers performed well to allow the Hawks to win the title. Dalton Klein pitched six strong shutout innings before having a rough seventh against Don Bosco. He only threw 66 pitches in the first six innings, and Coach Harpenau says that efficiency is coming from increased confidence.
That seventh inning saw Don Bosco score four runs while batting nine hitters to keep the Hawks from winning as convincingly as they would have liked. Coach Harpenau says he hopes an inning like that is a reminder to the guys that they have to play well all the time.
The Hawks are now 15-1 on the season with just a week and a half left to play before the district tournament starts. Coach Harpenau says his team is doing a lot of things right, but he says they still have things they need to clean up to make a deep run in the postseason.
Remsen St. Mary’s returns to action tonight at George-Little Rock.
