Grosenheider breaks Le Mars Softball’s career home run record in sweep of first-place Sioux City East

The Le Mars Community softball program had another player break a school record this week.

Le Mars senior Charli Grosenheider hit the 19th home run of her high school career to finish off a doubleheader sweep of Sioux City East. That 19th home run surpasses the previous career record of 18 set by Madison Heidebrink. Grosenheider says she was just trying to get on base to keep the game going in the seventh.

Grosenheider set the single-season home run record last year with 13 long balls in her junior season. The home run has been a little harder to come by this year with the record-breaker being her third of the season and first in a couple of weeks. Grosenheider says her coaches kept her going when she was feeling nervous about hitting a home run to break the record.

The moment was special for head coach Brooke Berkenpas who knew it was gone as soon as it left her bat. She says it was hard for everyone to contain their excitement.

The record comes after Grosenheider’s battery mate Brenna Leraas broke the career strikeout record the game prior. Coach Berkenpas says those two are special players, and she is happy that they are on her team.

The games were important for the team considering it kept the Bulldogs in the hunt for the MRAC Championship. Grosenheider says it was a great team win, and it can give them some confidence moving forward.

The Bulldogs have a busy weekend in Spencer competing in four games in two days. The Bulldogs return to MRAC competition at home on Monday against Sioux City West.
