The Le Mars Community softball team kept the MRAC title hopes alive with a doubleheader sweep at Sioux City East on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs are still in search for their first conference title since 2013. Keeping the hopes alive for a conference title in 2025 means a lot for a program that has that conference title as one of their goals. Le Mars head coach Brooke Berkenpas challenged the team to have a must-win mentality going in.
That message was received as Le Mars went on to score two runs in the first inning of the first game and another run in the second game. Coach Berkenpas says scoring early is vital towards success late in the year.
Le Mars trailed 5-3 going into the seventh inning but showed that they were not ready to back down. The Bulldogs then scored four runs with all nine hitters batting in the seventh. Coach Berkenpas says hitting became contagious with everyone getting great swings in the game-winning inning.
The Bulldogs hit the ball well again in game two with all nine hitters contributing with a hit in the victory. Le Mars had a four-run inning that helped spark them early in the second contest. Coach Berkenpas says everyone up and down the lineup had a great night.
The Bulldogs improved to 21-5 overall and 15-4 in the MRAC with the win. The Bulldogs will need to be close to perfect over the final nine conference contests if they want to win the MRAC title. Coach Berkenpas says the girls have to be focused if they still want to win the league title.
Le Mars ran their record to 23-7 overall after the weekend in Spencer. The Bulldogs are back home on Monday for a doubleheader with Sioux City West.
