The ninth-ranked Le Mars Community football team won their season opener on Friday night in Council Bluffs defeating Abraham Lincoln by a score of 35-14.
Sometimes, football teams struggle to get a footing in the first week of the season as players get back into game shape. That was not the case for the Bulldogs who scored touchdowns on their first and second drives of the season on Jami Sitzmann passes to Tycen Augustine. Head coach Ken Vigdal says the first one was big to get everybody on the right track early.
The Bulldogs were able to keep the Lynx off the scoreboard until late in the first half and early in the fourth quarter. Outside of those two drives, Abe Lincoln was able to move the ball but struggled to put the ball in the end zone. Coach Vigdal says his guys did a great job of drawing a line in the sand and not letting the Lynx cross it.
Le Mars took a 28-7 lead into the locker room, and it was tough to get both teams energized again for the final half of play. Coach Vigdal says his guys needed a quick change of the pace of play to help get them back to work in the second half.
The Bulldogs moved to 1-0 to start the year and will have a doozy of a week two matchup in their home opener this week. The now seventh-ranked Bulldogs will host Class 3A’s top-ranked team when Bishop Heelan comes to town on Friday night. With a future Iowa Hawkeye in the backfield running the football, Coach Vigdal says keeping the Crusaders off schedule will be critical.
Kickoff for that game will be at 7:00 PM at Jim Lorenzen Field in Le Mars.
