The Remsen St. Mary’s volleyball team improved to 3-1 in the War Eagle Conference with a straight-set win over Gehlen Catholic in Remsen on Thursday night.
The Hawks and Jays have been in some tough battles the last few years, and this one was no different. Maybe the toughest element of the night was the warmth in the non-air-conditioned gym in Remsen. Remsen St. Mary’s head coach Stacy Bunkers says getting the match done in the minimum number of sets encouraged the girls to play their best.
Meanwhile, Gehlen Catholic was having trouble putting it all together in their loss to the Hawks. Gehlen head coach Jessie Bohnenkamp says there was always something that was not clicking when it needed to.
The Jays were not helped out in their cause thanks to some tough serving from Remsen St. Mary’s. The Hawks unofficially tallied 12 service aces in the three-set win. Coach Bohnenkamp says getting behind early in a point is tough to come back from.
Remsen St. Mary’s got more production than from just serving. Their offense was rolling led by the strong play of Brielle Schorg who recorded 11 kills with just four attacking errors. Coach Bunkers says she has been a stable force in the front row for the Hawks.
With the loss, the Jays drop to 2-10 overall and 1-3 in the War Eagle Conference. Coach Bohnenkamp says her team is making too many mistakes at this moment, and that will have to change.
Remsen St. Mary’s is 4-2 with the win and 3-1 in the War Eagle Conference. The Hawks have a road conference matchup against Sibley-Ocheyedan on Tuesday next week before a busy Saturday with the CYO Tournament in Le Mars. Coach Bunkers says each day of competition will provide its own challenge.
Gehlen Catholic is back in action on Tuesday when they host Harris-Lake Park. They will join Remsen St. Mary’s in CYO competition on Saturday at home all throughout the day.
