After losing their first six games last year, the Akron-Westfield football program is 2-0 in district play after a 26-0 win at West Monona on Friday night.
The season started for the Westerners by getting blown out on the road at MMCRU. Head coach John Sievert says that loss highlighted the things that went wrong, and his guys have done a great job correcting them.
After leading Westwood 29-7 the week prior and allowing them to come back to within 10 points, the Westerners wanted to finish things better this week. Coach Sievert says the guys were able to limit the big plays against West Monona to keep them off the board.
Akron-Westfield did all this even with a bit of a shorter staff specifically on the line. In spite of that, different players stepped up to help the Westerners record over 300 yards of offense and record 12 tackles for loss against West Monona. Coach Sievert says he is glad that guys are stepping up when called upon.
The next stretch of games for Akron-Westfield could pose a challenge starting with their final non-district contest at home against West Sioux. Coach Sievert says continuing to do what has worked will be critical as the Westerners look toward the rest of the season.
Kickoff between West Sioux and Akron-Westfield is set for 7:00 PM on Friday night in Akron.
