Candidates Finalized for Local Elections in Plymouth County
The filing deadline for local elections in Plymouth County has passed, with several contested races across the county set for November.
Le Mars mayor Rob Bixenman has a challenger for his seat in Brian Hughes, while three city council seats also have contested races in Le Mars. In Ward 1, Jacqueline Perez will challenge incumbent Brian Bruns for his seat, while in Ward 3, Dan Dembinski will face incumbent councilman Mark Sturgeon. The at-large seat will be filled by a new council member, after incumbent Clark Goodchild announced last month he wouldn’t run for another term. Derek Conyers, Lenny Flack, and Beth Meyer all filed to run for Goodchild’s seat on the council.
In Westfield, Michael Bohlke is challenging incumbent Bill McFarland for mayor. There are two challengers for seats on Hinton’s city council, with Justin Mohning and Jessica Poss-Seaton running along with incumbents Katie Pierson and Jeff Felts. In Kingsley, Corey Sitzmann and Joshua Van Muyden are running against current council members Jason Jasperson and Justin Baker.
Akron has three candidates for their city council: incumbents Gerry Stowers and Eric Solberg are joined by Nick Hale for two seats on the council. Oyens has four persons running for three seats on their city council , with Kyle Plendl running along with incumbents Steven Swalve, Kathy Meis, and Marcel Konz.

Northwest Iowa Groups Receives State Funding for Homelessness Prevention
The Iowa Finance Authority has awarded over $1.3 million recently to improve homelessness prevention efforts across the state, including here in Plymouth County. The funding came from the new Iowa Homelessness Prevention Fund, or IHPF.
Family Crisis Centers, based in Sioux Center, received $65,000 from the Fund, to be used over a ten-county area in northwest Iowa, including Plymouth, Sioux, Lyon, and Osceola counties. The Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness received $104,000 for Woodbury County.
The program is designed to help Iowans that are at risk of losing housing with community-driven interventions such as short-term financial assistance, landlord mediation, and case management to keep individuals and families stably housed.

Trivia Night in Hinton
A trivia night in Hinton, hosted by the American Legion, is being held tonight in support of the Blackhawk’s wrestling program.
The night will have an 80’s theme, and will feature cash prizes for winners, raffles, and auctions. The price to register a team for the night is $250 for a table of 8 players. All proceeds will benefit the Hinton wrestling teams.
Registration is open online, and the event starts at 6 p.m. at the Hinton Community Center, at 205 W Main Street.
